Aeryn the assassin
16 September 2012 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Having entered Tormented Space Moya has taken quite a battering and is in a dormant state and her crew have had difficulty finding the necessary supplies. Eventually they find a suitable planet but the locals are wary of outsiders... the first we see of them is as they chase Chiana after she has caused offence by getting too friendly with the local men! That is the least of their worries though; Aeryn starts getting strange visions of what appears to be the future then shoots and kills the new leader who was expecting to bring peace to the warring tribes. According to tradition his son must now take over and his first responsibility is to catch and kill the assassin. Her friends are obviously keen to find her first to try to figure out what caused her to kill a man she hardly knew.

This, the first episode set in Tormented Space has a distinctly stand alone feeling which echoes the sort we saw in the first series; although here things seem somewhat darker. We are frequently shown the same event more than once which does cause some confusion at first; it does serve to echo the confusion members of the crew feel when they are under the influence of the strange bugs. The locals weren't the most interesting we've seen but I liked the delightfully hideous Paroos and E'Alet; a strange alien who could produce strange insects whose bite let him control most other people.

Even though I prefer episodes that are part of a wider plot arc this was enjoyable; I liked the sense of confusion early on and when we learnt what caused Aeryn to kill though it was both inventive and creepy.
