In his 2010 book "Inside Fame on Television - A behind-the-Scenes History", Michael A. Hoey reveals that scenes were shot on location in New York for several of the early episodes in season 5. The ones for this episode were the last to be filmed before the cast and crew returned to Los Angeles. But rain made them lose most of the afternoon, and Hoey hoped to postpone the filming of the musical number "One Dream" for one more day. However, executive producer Donald Reiker refused to add another day to the shooting schedule, and forced Hoey to film the entire sequence in one take once the sun came out late in the afternoon. This meant there were no close-ups of any of the cast singing the song. Hoey later filmed the actors against a black cloth background so he could superimpose their faces over the exterior shot.
Danny asks Chris what happened on the night of October 23, 1983 in order to establish his identity. This was the 30th birthday of this episode's writer Ira Steven Behr.
