During the Civil War, an eleven year-old boy did try to enlist in the United States Army. His name was John Lincoln Clem and he served as a drummer boy. He was captured by Confederate forces at the battle of Chickamauga and would would be wounded twice in combat during the war. He would eventually be allowed to enlist and would stay on active duty until 1916, rising to the rank of Colonel. Upon his retirement, he would be promoted to Major General. See more
