Among the recycled phasers used by the deuterium miners are Jem'Hadar hand phasers, Bajoran phaser rifles (all from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993)), and the Klingon sniper rifle from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991).
The evasive techniques T'Pol teaches the colonists are drawn from the Vulcan martial art Suus Mahna, which is named after Enterprise producer Mike Sussman.
This episode was inspired by the Wild West film The Magnificent Seven (1960), which itself was inspired by the Japanese film Seven Samurai (1954). The colony represents the village in that film; the deuterium represents the rice; the Enterprise crew represent the seven heroes. Ironically, in this one, seven is the stated number of bad guys.
The black walkways seen in the village are standard interconnecting rubber mats used in bars and restaurants.
Robertson Dean, who plays Korok, also played a Romulan pilot in Face of the Enemy (1993) and a Reman officer in Star Trek: Nemesis (2002).
