***SPOILERS*** Breaking ground in a former rat infested garbage dump in the South Bronx for a new American Electronics plant trouble starts brewing with the labor unions president Walt McGill, Cheater Morris, demanding impossible concession from management. Like a 7 hour workday something that even now over 50 years later, with people having to hold down two full time jobs just to pay the bills, is a pie in the sky pipe dream even for the members of McGill's union.
With our hero in the series the man who always has a plan social worker Niel Brock, George C, Scott, taking off for a three week vacation to Disneyland it's up to Congressman Charles "Handsome" Hanson, Linden Chiles, to work out a deal between McGill and American Electronics president Matt Warren, Barry Morse, that soon leads to a series of fireworks. McGill refusing to back down on his over the top demands, 7 hour work day at 10 dollar a hour as well as three months paid vacation, is about to have management replace his union workers with automation where all of them will be out of work and on the unemployment rolls before the years out. It's McGill's soon to be son-in-law Paul Jerome, Daniel J. Travanti, who steps in and forces a vote to settle the matter that may very well end up unseating McGill who's now considered by many to have become a ruthless dictator ready to destroy, with his wild demands, , the very union that he helped founded 30 years ago!
****SPOILERS****It takes a while but it was the near mutiny of his man that brought McGill back down to earth and to his senses. Always having his way in the past McGill didn't seem to realize that in the modern world it's easy to replace men with machines as labor history, since this "East/Side West/Side was broadcast, has shown. Being trapped in the past it was now the young and hip with what's happening, in the modern world, Paul Jerome who got the nod by the union leadership as president of the union putting McGill out of action. As well as by being far more reasonable in his demands in him being able to save it from going under together with it's by now out of touch and delusional founder Walt McGill.
