Waylon Jennings provided the voice of the Balladeer for every single episode of the series (as well as singing the theme song), but only ever appeared on-screen in one episode, in the 7th season's 'Welcome, Waylon Jennings', in which he plays himself visiting Hazzard.
One of the items that Bo and Luke Duke find in Waylon Jennings's mobile country music history museum is Buddy Holly's motorcycle. Waylon Jennings had a very personal connection with Buddy Holly, who discovered Jennings while he was working as a deejay at station KLLL in Lubbock, Texas, and hired him as a bass guitar player for his band. On the night of February 3, 1959, in Mason City, Iowa, Holly hired a charter airplane to fly himself and some of his band members to Moorhead, Minnesota. Jennings voluntarily gave up his seat on the plane to The Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson). Upon learning that some of his bandmates had chosen to take the tour bus to Minnesota rather than fly, Holly jokingly told Jennings, "Well, I hope your ol' bus freezes up!" Jennings jokingly replied, "Well, I hope your ol' plane crashes!" Later that night, the plane crashed in a cornfield outside Mason City, and Holly, Richardson, and Ritchie Valens were killed. For years afterward, Jennings was haunted by Holly's death, and felt responsible for it.
Waylon Jennings sings his then-current hit, "Never Could Toe the Mark" at the Boar's Nest in the show's final act.
When Waylon Jennings is singing at The Boars Nest behind him on the wall is a photo that looks like a wanted poster. It is in fact a cover to a various artist album entitled "Wanted! The Outlaws". Which features Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson , Jesse Colter and Tompall Glaser. Released in 1976.
