Have said a number of times already of loving and appreciating animation even more now than as a child with my knowledge having (hopefully) broadened outside Disney, Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry. As well as more things being noticeable through young adult eyes not as obvious before. Not that there is any bias as there is terrible animation out there and ones that significantly lose their appeal on adult re-watch.
'Ducktales' was one of those personal favourites. Luckily it still is. It captivated me as a child and to this day it's among the best shows Disney ever did and have ever done. Making one pine for the classic Disney and the quality of the animated shows they had in the 80s and 90s, as they sure, with exceptions, don't make them like this anymore. Can't watch The Disney Channel on the most part now with its quality decline so drastic and like Cartoon Network most of the air-time is taken up by shows that are barely mediocre or worse. 'Ducktales' strikes me as a show that is even funnier, more entertaining, more colourful and more inventive as a young adult.
"Scrooge's Pet" (not the most appropriate, as it is misleading, of episode titles that makes the episode less interesting than it is) is not one of the best 'Ducktales' episodes though. A lot to enjoy and be entertained by, but couldn't help feeling that some aspects could have come off much better than it did.
Will start with the good things, and there are many. The animation is good. It is bright and colourful with lively fluid movement, smooth drawing and meticulous attention to detail in the backgrounds. There are some fun expressions too, "Take Me Out of the Ballgame" especially. The music again is dynamic and beautifully orchestrated, never jarring with the action and full of energy. Disney had many theme songs that were irresistibly catchy to the extent one doesn't forget them, and that for 'Ducktales' to me was one of the best.
The writing entertains and is smart generally, especially for Launchpad who is as amusing as ever. Lucky is cute and amusing if a total pest as well. Really like Huey, Duey, Louie and Webby in "Scrooge's Pet", really liked their maturity and good intentions, and there are plenty of funny and charming moments. The voice acting for the regulars is good, especially from Russi Taylor and Alan Young and Terence McGovern were born for Scrooge and Launchpad (like their chemistry too, in fact all the chemistry was great).
However, the story is very basic and thin, more so than most 'Ducktales' episodes. The climax to me lacked excitement, there was tension in the animation but that's where the tension really ended unfortunately.
Did not care for Scrooge here, he is out of character stupid and his behaviour towards the kids was over-the-top even for the situation. Some may be put off too by the stereotypical accents and portrayals of the Scandinavians.
Summarising, pretty good episode but something missing. 7/10
