Friday deals with something most cops hope they'll never have to deal with in "The Big Thief".
16 November 2013 | by (Bradenton, Florida) – See all my reviews

Frank (Jack Webb) and Joe (Ben Alexander) are investigating a string of unusual robberies. At various hotels around town, a young man and woman have called for a doctor and then robbed the doctors--stealing any drugs as well as valuables. It seems pretty obvious they are addicts. So, the police contact the hotels to alert them and ask that they call the police if any of the guests request a doctor.

When the detectives finally find the room with the thieves, the guy panics and opens fire. Joe has no choice but to return fire--killing the thief*. Later, Joe is obviously broken up (as broken up as you'll ever see Friday) and he talks it out with a lady friend. It's the first time he ever killed anyone and it's weighing on him--as it should.

This was a very good episode of "Dragnet" for several reasons. The death was NOT a clean and 'nice' TV death--this guy bled and crashed through a window. I appreciated this, as too many shows made death seem too sanitary. Additionally, how an officer deals with killing anyone--even justified--is an important topic. Well worth seeing.
