The title refers to the doll made by Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear out of tar and turpentine to trap Br'er Rabbit in one of the Uncle Remus stories. Br'er Rabbit assaulted the sticky doll when it wouldn't speak and was trapped in the sticky mess. The term is still used for a "sticky" situation and has a negative racial connotations.
