Wow...punishments were not always so tough in the good old days!
"The Big New Year" begins on New Years Eve. Not surprisingly, all available police are on duty and so Friday and Smith are working an allnighter. Things are crazy due to all the celebrations but it all ends very badly when a cop is murdered very sensibly--by a creep who just felt like killing a policeman.
The rest of the show takes place over several days and consists of the two continuing the investigation. In the end, Smith himself almost becomes the assailant's next victim! And, surprisingly, when you see the epilogue, you learn that for one murder and one attempted murder of two cops, the guy only received a 10-year sentence--which seems surprisingly lenient. It violates the popular notion that criminals were treated a lot tougher in the old days!
By the way, the female dispatcher's voice sure sounded like perennial "Dragnet" guest star Virginia Gregg. I am reasonably certain this is the case.
