- While Sully and Micheala are out on a ride, Dr. Mike wants to stop in and see a patient named Ruby Johnson who lives a ways from town. Upon arriving at her cabin, they find her dead and decide to take her to town for a proper burial. While Mike is looking in the closet for Ruby's nicest dress, she finds a boy hiding in the closet. She takes him into town also and does an exam on him while the body is being prepared. During the ceremony, several of the townspeople are whispering amongst themselves. Afterward, Micheala finds out that the boy named Zack, was the child of a whore. He had lived with her at the saloon until she died when he was five. Ruby took him in and cared for him because Ruby was a former prostitute, also. It is also revealed that Zack may be mentally challenged. ("he was blue for quite a while after he was born.") When Brian is caught in class looking at a drawing, everyone assumes it is his. (As it turns out, Zack is a wonderful artist.) Micheala takes him into her home, buys him school clothes and gets him a haircut for school, all the while being teased and cajoled by the townfolks. They call him 'simpleton' amongs other names. Even Olive, the temporary school teacher, doesn't think he is capable of learning. But Micheala convinces her otherwise. The children call Zack 'idiot' and say some cruel things, so Zack runs away. They find him at Ruby's house hiding in the closet. Brian talks to him and convinces him to come back. **SPOILER**SPOILER**SPOILER** It turns out that Zack is Hank's son. Myra talks Mike into letting Zack come work at the saloon so he can "feel useful." When some drunks start harrassing Zack and threatening to mistreat him, Hank comes out, gets Zack out of the way and beats up the the drunks. While getting patched up, Micheala confronts Hank with her suspicions. He reluctantly owns up to it. When the townspeople make the decision to send Zack away, Hank finally admits it publically. Zack draws a picture of his mother for Hank. Hank then realizes that Zack has talent and needs to go somewhere that will nurture that talent. He goes to Micheala for help, knowing that he cannot take proper care of him.
