- While Kildare assists in the case of a pregnant woman who shows a lack of enthusiasm and even hostility to the idea of giving birth to her first child, Gillespie is involved in the case of the hospital's original benefactor, who is suffering from a perforated ulcer.—rbecker28
- A cranky old man has come to the hospital and is unwilling to have the necessary surgery to fix his heart condition. He insists on keeping his hat on. Dr. Gillespe recognizes him as the founder forty years ealier of Blair General hospital and realizes that no one would be at the hospital if not for him.
Dr. Kildare is temporarily assigned to the OBGYN unit. He's really not to excited to be there. The doctor who runs the unit welcomes him and shares his enthusiasm for what they do there. He's very competent and very proud of the job they do there.
Dr. Kildare is assigned to assist a woman who is expecting any moment and she doesn't really want to be there and is not too keen on delivering.
Dr. Gillespie talks the man into having the surgery. By all indications the surgery has gone well.
Dr. Kildare assists with trying to revive a 17 year young pregnant patient. They can't save her and she dies. The Senior doctor mentions how that is one of his first tragedies and how she could have been saved if she only had come in for pre-natal care earlier.
Kildare is devastated. Gilespie advises him that you must see the good that we do and accept the bad as the price.
In the mean time, the heart patient has recovered and said, "I had imagined that I was going to be buried on Friday and forgotten by Sunday". He ends up dying. Gillespie is devasted.
Kildare and Gillespie met in the cafeteria. Kildare is thrilled to have participated in the birth and shares in his enthusiasm while Gillespie listens to the good and tries to forget the bad and lets Kildare go on with his story.
