James Earl Jones and Diana Sands guest star in a story that's been told before but in a different setting: Should a doctor be dedicated to his profession or to making money from his profession?
Sands plays Jones' sister who has put him through medical school by operating a saloon in a depressed neighborhood. She's sick of the place and wants him to work at the hospital, (he could specialize in cardiology), and make some real money so they and their younger brother can get out of there. He feels obligated to stay and help the people there, especially when a mysterious epidemic breaks out.
It's interesting that they set up Jones and Sands as brother and sister when they act more like husband and wife. It may have something to do with the younger brother, who they had move into another household because they couldn't afford to take care of him and put Jones through medical school. This seems more likely if he's a brother rather than a son. The younger brother comes to idolize the old man who took him in but also runs around with a street gang that winds up beating and robbing an eccentric old lady, Beah Richards, (who played Sidney Poitier's mother in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner"). The old lady has a cache of money and it's where she got it from that turns out to be the key to epidemic – and it leads back to Sands, setting up a highly dramatic final scene.
