"What do we do with Old Man Rivers?"
13 June 2007 | by (Ambrosia) – See all my reviews

Mike is after the job of consulting surgeon at St. Swithins. Bingham is also up for it, but forgets to check his flies before the interview.

Upton looks certain to get the job, but then a rugby match between Highcross and St. Swithins results in a victory for the latter.

Collier, Stuart-Clark and Upton join in the boozy celebrations afterwards. On discovering that Mr.Rivers ( the consulting surgeon who had earlier interviewed Upton ) was Captain of the Highcross rugby team, Paul and Dick put him in a sack, then in a basket, and dump it in the river. Upton goes along with them because he thinks Bingham is in there. He also parks the Dean's Mini on the sunroof...

This is to 'Doctor At Large' what the 'Old Fennians Day' episode of 'Please Sir!' was to that show, very much an attempt to revisit the past. However, coming as it does after two excellent episodes, its a bit disappointing to see Mike and chums once again behaving like louts.

Ralph Michael's 'Dean' makes a welcome return though, and the priceless Frank Middlemass guest-stars as 'Mr.Rivers'.

Funniest moment - Bingham realising his flies are undone!
