The Gunfighters: Part 1 - Hit and miss western adventure
19 August 2014 | by (South Wales, UK) – See all my reviews

Review of all 4 parts:

The Gunfighters is a 4 part story beginning with A Holiday For The Doctor.

This story is a mostly comedic escapade for the TARDIS crew in the wild west. The comedy works very well at times but not at other times. The drama too is sometimes successfully executed and other times it is a bit of a mess.

It is set around the lead up to the gunfight at the OK Corral in the wild west town of Tombstone 1881. William Hartnell is great in this story and Peter Purves is also strong but overall the story is patchy in its writing and disappointing in its on screen production values. It can feel like an embarrassment in the show's history at times, particularly in part 3, with silly scenes and dodgy accents yet it is fun in many ways and not at all boring.

An interesting attempt to do something different, not very well executed but an entertaining romp at times at least.
