Storyline

Martin's somewhat difficult parents come to visit from their home in Portugal. They have not spoken to one another for seven years and Martin finds his mother to be very withdrawn. His father, a retired surgeon, is somewhat dismissive of Martin's decision to become a small town doctor. Things come to a head when they all visit aunt Joan and the real reason for his father's visit comes to light. Martin also deals with Maureen Tacy who has been putting on weight despite attempts at dieting. Martin's conclusions are both surprising and delightful. Louisa's friend Danny has a serious attack while renovating his new home, but Martin comes to the rescue. Written by garykmcd

Quotes

Christopher Ellingham: [referring to Mark] Possesses a wonderful naivety, your chum.
Dr. Martin Ellingham: Yeah.
Christopher Ellingham: Going to have his work cut out though.
Dr. Martin Ellingham: What do you mean?
Christopher Ellingham: Well, the only way he's going to keep her is if he locks her up in a cell. Mind you, you'd have to drug them to keep them. Two peas in a pod you two.

A chance to see much of why Doc Martin is a real git!

"The Family Way" is a show that contrasts Doc Martin's family with a new family to be in town. As for Martin, his father and mother come to visit and immediately it's apparent that his parents are awful. The father talks and talks and most of the time it comes off as criticism of Martin. He's a real horse's butt, that's for sure. As for the mother, she says nothing...nothing at all through most of the show. And, when she does talk, she is an evil viper--and you just have to hear her talk about her son to realize this. At the same time, a 50- something year-old lady has a variety of complaints--and Martin surprises her by telling her she' pregnant. This is a HUGE contrast to Martin's parents, as the mother and especially the father are overjoyed. The other subplot involves dust and a collapsed young--and you'll just have to see what all that is about as well. All in all, one of the best episodes--as it gives you nice insights into why the Doc is as cranky and cold as he is.
