Storyline

When Dave Caine tells Laura he wants a divorce after her job paid for seven years of his medical training, she causes a car crash after which she gets declared blind, possibly forever. He agrees to stay to care for her, at least till the final diagnosis. David's thus cut-off lover Julie Warren is desperate to get him to marry her. Shortly after Laura gets a very efficient new aid, Mark finds David shot dead in the bathroom. Julie declares her gun was stolen without her realizing it and Steve books her as the only suspect. However Jesse, her friend, convinces Mark to prove Laura could have killed him, which leaves one problem: how to prove she did it, even after she 'miraculously' regains her sight just before a test she couldn't fake. A poke in the eye...

I saw this episode just weeks after the Paralympics ended, and it left with me with an uncomfortable aftertaste about the blind character Laura Caine. It also sought to redeem Julie Warren, the accused murderer and all-round marriage wrecker. Someone switched the price tags in the script rewrites perhaps?

Here Laura is unfortunately blinded by a car accident; she was a passenger with her estranged medical student husband Dave, and as they were driving Dave wanted to end the marriage. Laura understandably was distraught because she worked as an admin. assistant/secretary at Community General Hospital to put Dave through medical school. Dave decided to stay with Laura after the accident, much to the chagrin of his lover Julie, who demanded Dave leave Laura. Julie even threatened to kill herself.

To cut a long story short, it was Laura that killed Dave, as she got her sight back, unbeknownst to Mark and team. She tried to frame Julie. I wonder what happened to the cute guide dog Laura had. The episode hardly seems sympathetic to Laura given Dave wanted to dump her.

Laura was arrested, and Julie was happy.

This episode was screened less than a fortnight before the epic 2000 US presidential election between Gore and George W. At the time who would have thought that 16 years later the former host of The Apprentice would be the GOP candidate?
