THE DETECTIVES – Kinfolk - 1961

This one is episode 50 of the 97 episode run of, THE DETECTIVES. This series starred Robert Taylor and ran between 1959 and 1962. The first two seasons ran at a half hour and the last season had a runtime of an hour. The series followed the detective squad in a big city precinct. Cast regulars included, Mark Goddard, Russell Thorson, Tige Andrews, Lee Farr and Adam West. Robert Taylor headlines as Police Captain, Matt Holbrook.

Detective Mark Goddard gets an unexpected visit from distant relatives. The three men, Dabbs Greer, LQ Jones and Lonny Chapman are "hillbilly" types in town to continue a backwoods feud. A man, Linclon Demyan, has just been released from prison. Demyan is also a backwoods type who has decided to bump off Goddard.

Of course this leads to all sorts of misunderstanding between the hill folk and the city types. This ends when Demyan takes a few shots at Goddard outside his apartment. Greer, Jones and Chapman use their tracking skills to hunt down Demyan. When Demyan gets the drop on Goddard, he is rescued by a knife thrown by LQ Jones.

Demyan is soon locked up again and this time will be going upriver for life. The reunion over, Greer and his bunch head back to the hills. Big city life just is not for them.

The whole episode is played with a somewhat comic tone as the two cultures clash. Normally, I'm not a fan of these comic attempts by serious series to lighten the atmosphere. But I must admit that this one left me with a smile on my face.
