THE DETECTIVES – Armed and Dangerous - 1960

This one is episode 21 of the 97 episode run of, THE DETECTIVES. This series starred Robert Taylor and ran between 1959 and 1962. The first two seasons ran at a half hour and the last season had a runtime of an hour. The series followed the detective squad in a big city precinct. Cast regulars included, Mark Goddard, Russell Thorson, Tige Andrews, Lee Farr and Adam West. Robert Taylor headlines as Police Captain, Matt Holbrook.

Detective squad members, Lee Farr and Russell Thorson are out tracking down a suspect in a hit and run incident. The man, George Grizzard agrees to come in to answer a few questions. He grabs his coat and follows the Detectives out to their car. He then hauls off and give Detective Thorson a right hook to the jaw and bolts across the street. He ducks behind a car, then pops up with gun in hand and starts firing at the Police. He wings Detective Thorson in the arm. Grizzard then dashes into a nearby multi-story apartment building.

Detective Farr gives chase and exchanges several shots with Grizzard before the man escapes upwards in the elevator. Thorson and Farr call in for reinforcements and wait. Once the other Police arrive they begin a floor by floor search for the gunman. Grizzard, has forced his way into a seventh floor apartment. Inside, is a small baby and a 17 year babysitter. The sitter, Denise Alexander is needless to say terrified of the gunman.

Downstairs the Police have gotten further info on the suspect, Grizzard. He is wanted in Ohio for bank robbery and murder. They need to be doubly careful when approaching the suspect. Grizzard has hatched a plan to extricate himself from the current mess he finds himself in. Grizzard calls down to the lobby and demands a car be brought to the front of the apartment. No funny business or he will kill the baby, and then the girl, Miss Alexander. Of course the Police have no intention of going for this. They however ask for some time to arrange for an automobile.

They use the time to go over a set of building blueprints. Chief Detective, Robert Taylor calls Grizzard on the phone to keep him busy. This is to allow Detective Thorson time to line up a shot through a small milk delivery door. Grizzard is soon on the wrong end of a quarter ounce of lead and goes down like a felled ox. The other detectives boot in the front door and grab up the swine. The babysitter and the baby are safe.

A quick, and to the point cop series that is really much better than I had been expecting. Enjoyed all the episodes I've seen so far. (B/W)
