A well-liked miner is killed during an attempted bank robbery when a bank clerk, a Civil War hero, can't bring himself to shoot at the outlaws. The mine owner is convinced that clerk is part of the outlaw gang and demands that Clay arrest the man for complicity in his employee's murder, but Clay refuses.
