Routine, despite Marie Windsor and a whip
21 December 2006 | by (Minneapolis) – See all my reviews

Marie Windsor makes a somewhat unlikely "hostage" in this episode, looking too competent and assured to be in any real danger, but it's always good to see her and one wishes the story-line had made more use of her character.

The only other distinguishing feature here is seeing the veteran character actor Frank DeKova stripped of his shirt and tied to a tree in preparation for a flogging. Allen Case and Wallace Ford want to force DeKova to cooperate with them in a scheme to capture one of his cohorts, and they try to frighten him with some "tough talk." "How many lashes do you figure he'll need?" Case casually asks. "The last man I whipped," Ford replies, "he took 80 lashes before he turned obligin'." Ford also points out the ants crawling around near DeKova's feet. "Ants are sure partial to open wounds," he adds. This is enough to break DeKova's resistance without so much as a swing of Ford's whip. In a way, this scene foreshadows the whipping Allen Case received across his bare back in a later episode titled "The Border Between."
