Pretty funny finish to a great series
9 April 2011 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Like almost all series of the early decades of TV, the final episode of Dennis the Menace had no dramatic changes, no special events in the final episode. It was, in its contents, a regular episode.

This one mostly featured John Wilson's aunt coming to visit. She had always considered her nephew to be a rather clumsy boy, and things he did here, such as accidentally opening her suitcase and spilling its contents on the ground, seem to confirm her opinion.

John is really hoping to make a good impression on his aunt because he is hoping she'll let him inherit her estate when she dies. This could have been a turn-off if John seemed greedy, but he explains that he only wants her money so there will be security for Eloise if he should pass away unexpectedly.

The other reason why it doesn't seem offensive is that she apparently has nobody else in mind for her estate other than some quirky charities for animals that he listed which sounded not-too-worthy. If he was working on getting her money instead of some other people, it would have made him look much worse.

John's concern about the money grows when Aunt Emma befriends Dennis, playing Monopoly and other games with him and even going out to referee a basketball game played by Dennis and his friends.

I believe there were several rather funny scenes where Wilson fouls things up and keeps getting more and more worried about the inheritance. Of course, Wilson does see the selfishness of his ways after seeing Dennis' mature attitude on the subject of giving.

This wasn't a great episode, but I laughed quite a few times and thought the story good enough for an 8.
