Classic TV from the 80 s

What a great TV show this was. Just watched the feature length 1st episode. There was some good action(Specially for a TV show) great one liners and it moved along very quickly. The cars look dated now and Mrs Barber out fits are a bit butch but it does stand the test of time unlike some shows from the same time.Michael Brandon is a very good leading man and should have been a bigger star than he is. Why they only made 3 seasons, 30 episodes is a shame. It could have run for a bit longer i am sure. Highly recommended to anyone who likes the action shows of the 70s and 80s.Go and get the DVD box set(1&2 in the Uk only) and enjoy this classic show.

It was the end of The Professionals and LWT wanted an action series as a replacement.

Step forward Dempsey and Makepeace. New York Police Lieutenant James Dempsey (Michael Brandon) is seconded to Scotland Yard as he uncovered corrupt cops in his department and life in the USA is unsafe for him.

Sergeant Makepeace (Glynis Barber) is an upper crust policewoman who has been sent undercover by her boss Spikings to investigate caviar smuggling. It has led to an undercover police officer being murdered.

Dempsey and Makepeace team up and soon cause mayhem including Dempsey killing several secret service officers. Spikings asking could you not shoot one dead and injure all the others.

The case of caviar smuggling leads to espionage in the sale of arms.

Director Tony Wharmby has directed a very muscular feature length episode. The opening scenes are set in New York. There are chase scenes featuring trucks, a building being blown up and a helicopter being pursued. No wonder Wharmby ended up in the USA making various television shows.

As well as action there is humour. Barber adds glamour and sassiness. There is instant chemistry between the actors, well they did end up marrying in real life.
