This episode marks the first time we see the interior of Merrick's newspaper office. Signs on the door and the exterior indicate that the paper is called the Deadwood Pioneer. In the first season a banner visible on the paper reads "Black Hills Pioneer" - the real life name of the newspaper. As of 2018 the Black Hills Pioneer is still in publication.
The ranch where the Deadwood set was constructed lay beneath the flight paths of four Los Angeles area airports, and aircraft noise was a constant problem during shooting. There was also a commuter rail line nearby. According to director Gregg Fienberg the scene where Trixie and Alma converse outside the hardware store was interrupted 43 times by various train and aircraft noises. It more than doubled the time it took to shoot the scene.
Cade Carradine, son of Keith Carradine (who played Wild Bill Hickock), has a cameo as Jubal, an angry prospector who stands next to Steve (Michael Harney) while he argues with Cy Tolliver (Powers Boothe) over the notice from the commissioner.
Miss Isringhausen reveals her first name--"Alice"--in a conversation with Silas Adams.
