At one point during their date, Dana Bright tells Johnny Smith that "resistance is futile," a phrase commonly associated with the Borg in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987). Both Michael Piller and Shawn Piller, the writers for this episode, have written scripts for The Next Generation and other spin-off Star Trek series.
There are several Star Trek references in this episode. At one point a woman wants a man to dance with her and he says that he doesnt dance. She says "resistance is futile" (that's what the Borg say) and they dance. The episode was directed by Michael Piller who directed several ST Borg episodes. Also, a guest star was Nichole DeBoar who played Ezri Dax in the final season of DS9.
Anthony Michael Hall's character refers to the movie Six Degrees of Separation (1993) in his bedroom. Hall was in the movie.
