Solid first episode to a wonderful, underrated cartoon!
17 June 2009 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Darkwing Duck is just a gem, but the main problem is that hardly anybody nowadays has heard of it. I am 17, but I remember watching it regularly while on holiday in Spain, and I am recalling it with such fondness. I watch it on You Tube and my opinion of it has never faltered. The first episode while not the best episode of the show, is still a very entertaining one. The animation was spot on, very colourful. The script was truly witty, with great lines such as "I am always forgetting the milk". The storyline, as daft as it sounds, but actually it's what makes it entertaining, tells of Taurus Bulba stealing a ramrod, and needs the inventor's granddaughter to tell him the code. Taurus Bulba was a great villain, whose appearance on the show was short-lived, not the best villain, but Tim Curry (the god of voice acting) voices him with such enthusiastic menace that he convinces you, with his intelligence and what have you. When he says excellent, he reminds me of a deeper version of Mr Burns from the Simpsons. Anyway, I love the character Darkwing, Jim Cummings was born to play him, and Terence McGovern is excellent as Launchpad. There is one scene when Launchpad is flying a plane, and Darkwing crashes into some laundry, and comes out of it wearing a pink bra. Seconds later he screams "Launchpad" and the plane crashes, this time into an electricity post. That scene, whenever I see the episode always cracks me up. I really liked Gossalyn, a very feisty character, and Christine Cavanaugh's vocal suited the character perfectly. The highlight of the episode was Bulbas's henchmen, chasing Darkwing and Gossalyn, in a James Bond-like car chase.Overall, a solid beginning to a forgotten gem. 9/10 Bethany Cox.
