Plot Summary

  • After the death of her husband, a widow and her 12-yr-old son and daughters come to Boonesborough to avoid legal action in the city. They and avoid her son going to debtor's prison after inheriting the family's £700 debt for their passage from Wales. After an initial disagreement with Mr. Greenbriar, an older Boonesborough bachelor, the boy Rhys is surprised when browsing the man's goods and impulsively steals a telescope. Ashamed, he flees Boonesborough and is nearly captured by unfriendly Indians, saved only by Mingo. In the mean time, the man regrets his lack of affection upon initially meeting Rhys and approaches the mother with gifts and forgiveness. After Daniel finds the boy with Mingo's tribe and convinces him to not stay with Mingo as he had planned, they return to Boonesborough. When a bailiff arrives intending to take the whole family back to the city under a warrant for the mother, the four escape Boonesborough after townspeople interfere with the bailiff. But their escape is short lived as the mother is injured when they try to raft downstream. Daniel suggests a resolution by having Mr. Greenbriar marry the mother, thus changing the family's name and apparently nullifying the warrant.
