DANIEL BOONE – The Family Fluellen – 1964

This is the fourth episode of the long running 1964-70 series about the life of American frontiersman and explorer, Daniel Boone. The lead is played by Fess Parker. Also in the mix are Albert Salmi, Ed Ames, Patricia Blair, Veronica Cartwright and Darby Hinton.

Fess Parker and Albert Salmi are out checking their trap lines. There seems to be a problem. Someone has been stealing the animals off the trap line. This of course is not looked kindly upon by the local types. Parker and Salmi track down the poachers, and discover they are a family group with Bethel Leslie and three young kids. The four, fresh off the boat from Wales are trying to build a cabin.

Boone, (Parker) points out, that with winter coming, there is no way they would survive the weather, or the Shawnee raiding parties that frequent the area. Parker offers them shelter for the winter at the fort. Leslie agrees for the sake of her children.

Leslie however is less than friendly when dealing with the fort's residents. We discover that the family is on the run from debt collectors. The family had borrowed 700 pounds for the trip to America. Leslie's husband had then died on the trip over, leaving the oldest boy, Donald Losby, to inherit the father's debt. Leslie had packed up the kids and fled out into the interior.

Of course who should show, but several bailiffs looking for Leslie and her family. The lad, Losby high tails it out into the woods to escape and gets lost. Now Parker has to find the boy and figure out how to get the family out of trouble with the law. Parker soon has a local barrel maker, Harold Stone, step up and offer to marry Leslie. The name change relieves the boy of the debt. A twist here is that Leslie has been injured and is on her deathbed.

An interesting episode with the normally ravishing looking Leslie, done up to look 10 years older than she really was.
