The story takes place in a prison, where the young Paul Newman is one of the inmates. One of the men is killed during a shower session, killed with a knife. The chief warden orders an investigation, and asks each inmates what he knows about this murder. Newman is asked too but he claims that he doesn't know anything, that he doesn't want to be bothered in any way. He and his pal get a new cell mate. Is he an undercover informer for the warden?
You have here a good character study behind bars, in the can. I guess Frankenheimer will use this kind of material for the BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ atmosphere.
