Storyline

The uniforms finally arrive, albeit without buttons, and all other supplies remain a matter of 'improvisation'. Grim HQ inspector Major Regan thus scolds the stuff and the black market even before testing the men. STill, thanks to Wilson's instructions the platoon passes. However, Jones is over age, so he's fired unless he passes an obstacle course within 15 minutes, while nightly tests remain over two hours. Written by KGF Vissers

Is Jones too old?
6 March 2008 | by (Manchester) – See all my reviews

A great episode from the first series of 'Dads Army'

A Major Reagan is visiting the platoon to see how they are getting on as a unit. He is impressed, but Jones makes a bit of a hash of things and causes mayhem. Reagen says that Jones is too old. If Jones doesn't pass the assault coarse in fifteen minutes, he will have to stand down. Jones has a practise. He takes two hours and fifteen minutes- knock off two hours- he's done it. The platoon look at Walker for an idea. He has it. Cheating. Jones only does the very beginning and the very end of the assault coarse, the likes of Walker, Pike, Frazer and Godfrey do the rest. It works.

A fine episode which showed great character development. It shows that Walker was very much the brains of the Private's and the men turn to him for inspiration- rather like Bombadier Solomans in Perry and Crofts 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum' Also, it shows the family like way of the men to one another, the men desperately wanting to keep Jones in the platoon. Martin Wyldeck played Major Reagen, he would appear in the next episode 'Shooting Pains' again as The Major, but we wouldn't see him again there after. He of course was in the opening episode of 'Fawlty Towers', 'A Touch of Class' as 'Sir Richard Morris' He is the man who gets shouted 'YOU SNOB!!!' by Basil Fawlty. Edward Sinclair also makes his first appearance as 'The Verger' even though he is casted as The Caretaker in this episode.

Best Bit: The assault coarse itself which is a telecine, but brilliantly choreographed.
