Storyline

After Mainwaring complains that the men's saluting is sloppy a runaway barrage balloon appears with the verger clinging onto it. He is rescued and various people, including Godfrey's sister Cissie, are asked to hang onto it until Mainwaring takes charge. Unfortunately for him it takes off in the breeze with him holding onto the other end of its rope, dragging him through trees and a haystack until it stops on a railway bridge. The men are about to secure it but then an officer comes by and in order to perfect the saluting so beloved of Mainwaring they have to let go of the balloon.. . Written by don @ minifie-1

Mainwaring in the sky
23 February 2007 | by (Manchester) – See all my reviews

A really funny episode of Dads Army.

The men notice Mr Yeatman hanging from a barrage balloon. So the men, the Vicar and the ARP Warden rescue him down. They tie it to a tree, but while Mainwaring is holding the balloon, it escapes the tree and goes sky high, with Mainwaring still holding it. So while the men try to rescue him, he goes through a haystack (with a courting couple in it), goes into peoples washing etc. The men finally rescue him. Now all the men have a hold of the barrage balloon. When an officer says how well the men have done, they hold there hands up to salute, forgetting about the balloon, and the balloon goes sky high.

In the radio episode of this episode, Jones goes up with Mainwaring. Probably because Mainwaring on the balloon was visual comedy, but if Jones goes up with him, then Jones and Mainwaring can have a conversation Best Bit: Hodges stealing the old mans bike.
