Storyline

Mainwaring fears the Nazis may send spies across the Channel, so he orders the lighthouse manned by lance corporal Jones, Pike, Godfrey and Frazer, who tells his mates a terrifying story. The trio accidentally starts the mechanism and is unable to shut it down, their attempts only make it worse until the mighty headlight points to town and the siren blows. On shore, the ARP goes berserk, especially when a Luftwaffe attack approaches, while Mainwaring, Wilson and Walker desperately try to find out how to get to their party without a boat or telephone line. Lighthouse mayhem

A great episode from the fourth series of the truly brilliant 'Dads Army'

Mainwaring has a new command post for the men, in Walmington's Lighthouse. Whilst there Jones and the men accidentally turn the light on, illuminating the entire town. The Warden is furious, to which he shouts 'Put that Light Out' Then an invasion starts. Walmington will be seen by enemy bombers for miles. The Lighthouse Keeper tells them how to put it out, so Mainwaring gets in touch via telephone. Jones puts it out and Walmington is very lucky not to have been hit by bombs.

A brilliant episode. Avril Angers made her second appearance as the telephone operator, she played the same role in the episode 'The Lion has Phones' She appeared as Ma in the ill fated Vince Powell scripted John Inman sitcom 'Odd Man Out' Gordon Peters made one of four appearances in 'Dads Army' this time playing the light house comedian. A great character actor, had a lead role as the Doctor in 'Never the Twain' and played the boring Ronnie in several episodes of 'One Foot in the Grave' He's also turned up in 'You Rang M'Lord' 'My Family' and 'Little Britain' was well as appearing in scores more sitcoms. Steward Sherwin played an ARP warden for the third and last time in 'Dads Army' He's also appeared in 'Doctor at Large' 'Fawlty Towers' and his dog did his business in Hyacienth's garden in an episode of 'Keeping up Appearances' Best Bit: MAINWARING: Now, imagine I was in Hitler's shoes. What would he be thinking? WALKER: What are you doing in his shoes.
