Hysterically Funny first time round
29 May 2007 | by (Manchester) – See all my reviews

I recently bought the final series of Dads Army. Prior to that I had seen all the surviving episodes, accept 5 episodes from the last series, as it is never repeated. Wondering why the final series is never repeated, I thought maybe it wasn't up to scratch. Watching it, I realised how wrong I was.

There is a show happening in Walmington. The Home Guard and The Wardens are doing the last acts. The Home Guard are doing a reenactment of St George and the Dragon, to show how good always beats evil. They try to make the dragon look like Hitler as they put swastika's on it. But there is one problem, The Wardens have decided to do the same thing, but neither of them know. Mainwaring plays George and he has a suit of armour. The episode is extremely high on slapstick, how things keep going wrong, the suit of armour causes mayhem. etc. Now comes the show and The Home Guard are up first. Hodges is furious to see they are doing the same as The Wardens, so there is only one thing for it, a duel. It's George v George and The Dragon v The Dragon.

There is only one problem with having slapstick episodes, it is only funny the first time. I nearly died when I first saw Father Ted kick Bishop Brennan up the Arse, but I haven't laughed when I saw it again. Again, I had fits when I watched the Laurel and Hardy film "Men O War" for the first time, but I have hardly laughed at it since. Also, It Ain't Half Hot Mum, also by Perry and Croft is full of slapstick and some episodes are only funny first time round, but not all of them that's for sure.

Best Bit: When Pike keeps closing the doors on Mainwaring's helmet.
