Da Vinci is feeling a little down about life in general, and isn't sure why. He unfortunately takes it out on those around him. Gabriella offers some possible explanations, all just speculation on her part. But he realizes it's something he's just going to have to work through. Unfortunately he still has to work while he's feeling this way. The case he is investigating doesn't help as it involves a child, eight year-old Cynthia Jorgensen. Her parents took her to the hospital emergency ward where she was diagnosed with the flu. Cynthia died half a day later at home. From the autopsy, it is discovered she died of malaria. This discovery is odd since she had not been to the tropics. With this discovery, Da Vinci tries to find more information from the Jorgensens. He is too late as Cynthia's mother, Melissa, also dies of malaria.
