Buttock-clenching humour at its best, 12 February 2007
Author: DVD_Connoisseur from England

"The Group" is a marvellous, memorable episode to complete the first season of "Curb". Larry David, Cheryl Hines and Jeff Garlin shine in this tale of lies, deceit and unlucky coincidences that results in a painfully funny comedy of errors.

Larry is a one-man disaster area but, at the same time, is Everyman. There's a lot of Larry in me and I'm sure he represents a large proportion of the male population. Larry means well but his "talk first, think later" approach to life is a recipe for catastrophe.

It's sometimes the little slices of dialogue that make this series so delicious. Larry's explanation why he's "tapped out" and incapable of love-making is superbly realistic and honest. There are times when you feel more like a fly-on-the-wall than a viewer of a television show, thanks to brilliant improvisation by the cast members.

In "The Group", external events act against Larry's drive to do "the right thing" when he agrees to accompany his ex-girlfriend, played by Robin Ruzan, to incest survivor group meetings. What could be a very difficult area to cover in a comedy series is handled extremely well and the show delivers an overwhelmingly successful ending to what has been a thoroughly entertaining first season.
