The first shows of the show's next-to-last season had an opening in front of a Mother Hale mural. However, when there was a disagreement over what compensation would be paid to the kids who painted the original mural, the show switched back to its previous season's Apollo Theater-themed opening with an added graphic for Erika Alexander, who became a regular on the show. Some shows began with Bill Cosby and Raven-Symoné telling the viewers that it was not a repeat. The final season used a slightly modified version of the Mother Hale opening.
The sequence before the credits with Olivia wearing a Bart Simpson mask is a reference to the fact that Fox scheduled The Simpsons (1989) up against this show, which made national news. Some sources erroneously reported that the animated series beat The Cosby Show in the ratings, but this is inaccurate. For the two years the shows were on at the same time, Cosby won in the annual Nielsen ratings. It came in 5th place in the 1990-1991 season and in 18th place in the 1991-1992 season; The Simpsons did not make the Top 30 either season.
