IMDbTV Pick: Showtime's "Penny Dreadful"

The subtle trick Showtime's "Penny Dreadful is that it is far less about the blood, gore and the specter of gruesome death than the sharp pain and exhilarating pleasure of living, and the terror of feeling alone even in close company. Read our review in the May Picks section.

We want our fish back
27 July 2014 | by (Hamburg, Germany) – See all my reviews

Conan and his companions are alarmed by fishermen that all fish were eaten by a sea monster. Hissah Zul hopes that Conan will be killed by the sea monster (a strange creation, a mixture of bug, snake and octopus) if he goes looking for it. The queen of the country has to hide in a cave, she was banned by Hissah Zul, while the wizard Aktel (Dean Tarolly) has taken her place as the ruler. Aktel tries to sacrifice Ina (Sydney Coale Phillips), a local girl, to the monster, but Conan saves the girl, asks the queen for help and begins yet another fight against the soldiers of Hissah Zul.

Good episode with a great shots of the rocky coastline and its splashing waves. Vulkar returns for one episode, replacing Bayu temporarily. In the German TV broadcast, the episode was put after episode 12 (Homecoming) with an overdubbed explanation why Bayu is gone. Anyhow, that was probably an afterthought for an episode that belongs to a much earlier place in the season.
