Storyline

Del Packer, a famous baseball star who was drafted into the army, winds up as a replacement in the squad. While Kelly looks for a way to make some money by setting up a baseball game with a neighboring outfit, Billy--a devoted baseball fan--is awestruck to be in the same squad as one of his heroes. However, Packer has his own demons to fight, and while the other squad members are too star-struck to notice that something may be wrong, Saunders isn't. Written by frankfob2@yahoo.com

Trivia

The ruined, burned-out town of Avranches and the "winery" at the end of the episode were actually outbuildings on the ranch of cowboy star Gene Autry. The estate, comprising several hundred acres, had suffered a devastating fire; many buildings were badly damaged or destroyed and many trees and much acreage were burned. Director Burt Kennedy heard about it and made arrangements to shoot this episode at the various fire-damaged sites on the ranch, as a change from the standard French village set on the MGM lot that was usually used for such purposes. Goofs

The episode shows a flashback of "Far From the Brave", where the Allied artillery bombard a town. But the artillery crews shown are German. See more »
