- Captain Cole [James Daly] is reunited with his son, Jack [James MacArthur], who he hasn't seen in years. Jack is now a reporter who is sent to the front to cover the war. Jack arrives at HQ just as Captain Cole returns from a patrol and it is evident right from the start that his relations with his son are strained. Jack is stopped from going on patrol by his father but eventually manages to join a patrol with Lt Hanley and Captain Cole. The patrol is ambushed by Germans and is pinned down in a farmhouse. Doc is wounded in the first rush and manages to break away into the bush and make his way back to get reinforcements. While they are pinned down in the farmhouse Captain Cole and Jack realise that they are closer than they believed and manage to patch up their problems just as Caje arrives with reinforcements to relieve them.—Stevo15
- The squad are escorting an Engineer Captain, Capt Col [James Daly] who is mapping bridge sites when they are joined by his estranged son Jack Cole [James MacArthur] who is a journalist. There is immediate friction between them as they have never been able to get along. When the squad is going out on patrol with the Captain, Jack announces he will come along and his father says no. Lt. Hanley takes the patrol out and sends Caje and Pvt. Kean to scout ahead. They report that all is clear but then all have to go to ground when a German armoured patrol comes along. Capt. Cole manages to keep them under cover and avoid the Germans. After returning to base Lt. Hanley takes another patrol out this time accompanied by Jack Cole. Capt Cole returns from HQ and objects to his son going on patrol by Hanley tells him he has been ordered to let Jack go on patrol and it is his decision. As they are moving towards a farmhouse they are attacked by a large German force and have to take cover in the house. Doc is wounded in the first attack and takes cover away from the others. The Germans start to encircle the squad who are now in real trouble and their Captain sends for heavy reinforcements. Doc manages to get away and also goes for help. He makes it back to base and Sgt. Saunders gets a patrol together to go to help. Capt Cole is upset when the 18 year old Pvt. Kean is killed and starts to talk to his son, Jack, explaining how he had struggled to settle down and how he regretted not being their when his wife died. The Germans bring up a panzerfaust (bazooka) and commence to shell the house. As they move in to finish Hanley and the others off, Saunders and the rest of the squad hit them from the rear and manage to finish them off instead. Capt. Cole is wounded but has reconciled with his son Jack and they all move off back to base together.
