Show Intent and You Get All Guilty Parties
biorngm26 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The sixth episode of the first season sets out to have the killer revealed about half-way through Brenda's investigation, but the intentions of the killer are not premeditated. We can't get him for B & E because he had access to a key supposedly left by the victim, he can't be arrested for rape because he reasonably thought he had consent, and charging him with murder, he will argue self-defense because the victim fought back. Brenda has a glazed look in her face repeating victim Carla Simmons fought back is what is wrong. Tao asks, you have a confession, what is it you are trying to prove? Intent, Lt. Tao, intent, because without intent we do not have a murder, and our rapist goes free.

A young woman is found murdered in her home, a rape victim and a Congresswoman's daughter. Brenda is attacked in the same home while investigating the crime and the attacker claims the meeting was to be consentual, despite the rape attempt. There is a sadomasochistic web site the man followed for the "date" that was prearranged. He is arrested for the attempted rape and battery of a police officer. As Brenda heals from the attack, she leads the team of officers to the web site headquarters, where she forces the owner to show the records of the responders to the woman's address. They track down the killer, a neophyte fraternity member, telling the police the woman resisted the attack fighting back harder than expected.

Brenda puts ex-boyfriend Brett's stuff on the table asking for Carla's house key since that was the deal made with Carla. Brenda says, she would return your stuff and you would give her back the key. Brett says oh yeah, I must have lost it. Brenda says really, the landlord only issued two keys, one Carla kept and the other she gave to you. Brenda produces a key, which Brett tries to take, but Brenda pulls it back. She says I got this from the guy who raped and murdered Carla, which you left outside for him. The killer found it outside her house under the rock where you said it would be. If you didn't intend for anyone to rape Carla, why did you leave the key for him? Brett is silent. Brenda comments, shoot, now we have a problem. Gabriel speaks, if someone dies in the commission of a felony, like solicitation of rape, and there was proven intent, Brenda adds, that is first-degree murder. Brett speaks, saying I thought if she knew what real violence is like then she would know what I did was really nothing.

Not all team officers appear in this episode, yet it is worth watching like all others because the story is believable, the acting is superb and the pace moves as always to a solid conclusion with Brenda's interview. Meredith Baxter is an exceptional add-on to the cast playing the victim's mother.

I'm so glad i got the dvd to watch this series, the lead is just an amazing actress , this episode is brilliant, one of the best in crime series drama that ive ever watched. She portrayed each emotion brilliantly and I find myself applauding by the end of the episode. The plot may be simple for some who watch many crime TV series but the execution is upmost perfection. Most of the time , her subordinates rolled eyes or dread working with her but by the end of this episode they were all smiling and in awe of her brilliance in the interoggation room ! Amazing amazing amazing acting!
