CITY OF ANGELS – The House on Orange Road Avenue – 1976

"25 bucks a day, plus expenses"

This series is about a P.I. in 1935 Los Angeles. It features Wayne Rogers as the headliner. Rogers is a permanently broke Private Detective who goes by the handle, Jake Axminster. He works out of an office in the Bradbury Building. He is constantly at war with corrupt Police Lt Clifton James. Always in hot water, Rogers is aided by his somewhat loopy secretary, Elaine Joyce, and his lawyer pal, Philip Sterling. Some nice period detail and such help the stories along. (Rogers tools around in a beat up 1930's rag-top) The series only ran for 13 episodes. This particular episode is the 6th of the production run.

Private Investigator is hired by two wealthy women, Susan Howard and Susan Sullivan. The women live up the coast from LA. They would like Rogers to look into an 8 year old murder case. It seems the two women had been charged with murder in the case. They had been gotten off because of a hung jury. They want Rogers to find who really did the murders. $300 soon has Rogers on the case.

The only help the women can give Rogers is a vague clue about a phone call they received a while back. A woman had called and said that local building contractor, Billy Green Bush was involved. Rogers checks on the fellow and finds him in a local bar three sheets to the wind. He buddies up to the man and the two are soon talking about life and women etc. Rogers, figures he should check out one woman Green Bush mentioned, his ex.

The woman, Lara Parker, is rather forthcoming on info about Mister Green Bush. A woman scorned you know. Anyways, it seems that Green Bush had let slip one night under the Influence of the bottle, that he had been involved in a murder. Rogers now decides to fill in the two women, Sullivan and Howard about his progress.

He is however grabbed up by 4-5 men at his auto and given a sound thrashing, and a warning. Leave town or end up dead. Roger drags his battered self to see the two women. He quits! He then finds out that he is the fourth P.I. the women had hired. The others had also quit after being warned off. The offer of a thousand dollar bonus, on top of his fee, has him back on the case.

Rogers digs deeper, going through news reports and other possible murder cases. He finds a link connecting his case to several other murders. He pays another visit to Mister Green Bush at his home. It soon turns out that Green Bush is a member of the local Klu Klux Klan chapter.

Needless to say there is a shootout with several more members of the Klan with Rogers luckily emerging victorious. The Police are called and Rogers gives all his info to them. He then visits the women again to say he had found the real killers, and that they had all died in the gun battle.

Okay episode, but nothing really outstanding story or action wise. It is interesting to see Susan Sullivan in an early role. Sullivan is well known to television fans for her roles on the popular DHARMA AND GREG (1997-2002) and CASTLE (2009-2015)
