CIMARRON CITY – "To become a Man" -1958
This is the third episode from the 26 episode run of the western series, CIMARRON CITY. This series ran between 1958 and 1959. The star of the series was George Montgomery, a rich cattleman who is also the mayor of Cimarron City in the Oklahoma Territory. Regular cast members included, John Smith, Audrey Totter and Stuart Randall.
Cattleman George Montgomery is the trying to help out a former ranch hand. The man, William Talman, is a widower with two young boys. Since the death of his wife, Talman has turned to the bottle for comfort. He has also become a petty thief in order to pay for his drinking habit.
The town Sheriff, Stuart Randell suspects Talman is behind a string of break-ins around town. He tells Montgomery about his suspicions and Montgomery confronts Talman. Talman denies the allegations. Several nights later, Montgomery catches a man rifling through his office. He tackles the man in the darkened room and the man is shot in the struggle. A light is produced and Montgomery sees that it is his friend, Talman. Talman begs Montgomery not to tell his boys about what he has become, then, he expires.
Montgomery makes arrangements to adopt the two boys, Gary Hunley and Robin Riley. Talman's death is blamed on a bunch of outlaw types that had rode through town a few days before. Montgomery's friend, lodging house owner, Audrey Totter, suggests that the boys would be better off in a home with a woman. Montgomery knows this is true, but feels guilty about Talman's death.
The oldest boy, Robin Riley, swears revenge for his father's death and practices with his dad's six-gun every day. Riley soon becomes rather good with the gun. Needless to say, the outlaw types ride back through town. The gang leader, Jack Lambert, is soon called out by young Riley. Lambert is of course not the least bit bothered about killing Riley if pushed.
Montgomery steps between the two and tells Riley his father had died pulling a robbery. The boy needless to say takes this hard and now blames Montgomery. Montgomery does nothing when the kid pulls iron on him. He simply tells the boy to "grow up and be a man, your father was not the hero you thought he was." Riley holsters up and the crisis is over.
Richard Bartlett again handles the directing reins. A sharp looking episode with three time Oscar nominated, and one time winning cinematographer Lionel Linden at the camera controls.
