CIMARRON CITY – "Medicine Man" -1958
This is the fifth episode from the 26 episode run of the western series, CIMARRON CITY. This series ran between 1958 and 1959. The star of the series was George Montgomery, a rich cattleman who is also the mayor of Cimarron City in the Oklahoma Territory. Regular cast members included, John Smith, Audrey Totter and Stuart Randall.
A medicine show wagon rides into town and sets up shop. The couple running the show are Gary Merrill and June Lockhart. They are doing a fair business selling harmless cure-alls. They move from town to town just looking for a place to settle.
When local boarding house operator, Audrey Totter, gets badly hurt after a horse starts kicking, Merrill steps up. It turns out he is a real doctor. He does a delicate operation on Totter saving her life. The town, led by George Montgomery, ask Merrill and his wife to stay on. The town donates a small bit of land and builds the couple a house and surgery.
The doc turns out to very popular with all. The viewer however discovers that the couple are on the run. Merrill, a serving Army doc, had deserted after being charged by a superior with malpractice. Merrill had been forced to take off the wounded superior's arm because of infection. The man, Thayer Roberts, says that Merrill botched the operation and took off the arm in error. Merrill and his wife had fled and assumed false identities.
After a few months go by, a US Marshall, Robert Wilke, shows up looking for Merrill. Wilke is however looking for Merrill under his real name. Wilke quickly becomes a pest as he questions everyone about the new doc. Mayor George Montgomery smells a rat and sends off a few telegrams asking about Wilke.
Merrill and Lockhart decide it is time to make like the birds and fly off. This idea does not work as Thayer Roberts now shows up, and points out to Wilke that Merrill is indeed the man he is looking for.
Town mayor, George Montgomery has gotten the answers to his telegrams about Wilke. Wilke it turns out is not a US Marshal. He is a bounty hunter working for Thayer Roberts. Montgomery, along with town Sheriff, Stuart Randall, steps up when Wilke makes his play. Lead flies and Wilke eats dirt. Thayer Roberts catches a round as well. Doc Merrill goes to work and saves his life again. Roberts at last realizes that he had been wrong about Merrill. He will have the charges dropped.
This somewhat, convoluted story is nowhere near as bad as I'm making it sound like. Well worth a watch.
