After spending five years in prison for a man, Ray Masters is in Gunnison to settle an old score with the man who has other enemies as well. Cheyenne, an old friend, has to stop him as the interim sheriff before he carries out his promise.
Cheyenne is the interim sheriff in Gunnison. He is surprised while getting a shave by Ray Masters, an old friend. Ray has been gone for five years spending the time in prison for another man on charges of selling liquor and guns to Indians. Ray was promised that his mother would receive $5,000 but instead she died of poverty. Rod Delaplane promised the money if Ray took his place. Ray plans to kill Rod for revenge. At the same time Rod is pressuring rancher John Hanson to sell his place and Hanson is in arrears on his taxes. Cheyenne tries to talk Ray out of his mission but Ray will have none of it. Cheyenne resorts to having the bartender drug Ray so he can jail him. Upon hearing the news from Cheyenne, Rod confronts his enforcer, Dan Gibson. Gibson swears he paid Ray's mother and produces a receipt signed by her but Ray denies it is her signature. When Hanson's barn burns, Ray sees a way to get his revenge and force Rod into a gunfight. Even though the setting was Gunnison, Colorado, the Bird Cage saloon and sheriff's office and jail were the same sets as used on the then-recently canceled Warner Brothers western Lawman (1958), which was set in Laramie, Wyoming. Lawman had a series finale in June 1962, about 5 months earlier. Cheyenne (1955) would follow suit less than a month after this episode's air date, with a series finale on December 17, 1962.
