Cheyenne rides in to visit his old friend Frank Collins who had been a lawman. He finds Frank bound to a wheelchair due to a gunshot, depressed and harping on his son Gilby who loves guns but has no friends due to his father. Cheyenne decides to befriend Gilby in town treating him to the shooting exhibit at the circus. Lige Crawford has his son Alfred push Gilby into a shooting contest with the show's marksman Pat Kinsey by shooting a lit cigarette in the mouth of showgirl Nita. Gilby wins a rifle angering Kinsey. Later, as Gilby and Nita talk, Kinsey hits her forcing Gilby to protect her. Kinsey draws but Gilby kills him. Kinsey is related to the Crawfords causing Lige to push to lynch Gilby as the law is out of town. Nita says Gilby is innocent but they ignore her. Cheyenne stops the lynching telling Gilby to go to the town where the marshal is and turn himself in with Nita as his witness. Instead they head for the border with Mexico with a posse and Cheyenne chasing them. Written by
