Cheyenne is hired to replace Cripple Creek Marshal Hugh Beaumont, a friend of his, who died after recommending Cheyenne. All he needs to do is keep the peace on Peace Street and keep the drovers on Cow Street off Peace Street. One of his deputies is Bill Lockhart who is engaged to Jenny Beaumont, the daughter of the previous marshal. Lockhart has said he plans to resign once Cheyenne learns the ropes. After seeing the drovers in action Bodie proposes a law: 10 PM curfew, closed on Sunday and 2 drink limit per man. This threatens the revenues that folks on Peace Street have been reaping from Cow Street and they don't like it. The respectable people on Peace Street including Mayor Myron Ackelroyd hide their ownership of the saloons on Cow Street through others. They decide to try to bribe Cheyenne as they did Beaumont to go along with their wishes but Cheyenne decides to resign instead leaving the job to Lockhart. In addition Big K ranch owner Carl Banner wants in on the money putting pressure on the secret owners.
