He finds him in Sacramento in jail for fighting and disturbing the peace. When Shorty is shot through his jail cell window, Cheyenne sets out to find his friend's killer and the rest of the secret he started to tell him but didn't get a chance to finish. Cheyenne knowing Shorty has a wife and son is given his few possessions to return to them after a lawyer, Saylor Hornbook, tries to take them first. Back in his hotel room Cheyenne is attacked in the dark by a large man who tries to search Cheyenne's room. Did You Know?

Unlike other programs of the time or even the following decade, three of the four main characters are still alive as of May 2016: Clint Walker, age 89, Joanna Barnes, age 81, and Mike Connors, age 90.

Only the oldest of the four, John Russell, is no longer alive, having passed away in 1991 at age 70. He would have been 95 as of May 2016. See more »

Saylor Hornbook: [Upon finding the dead body of a woman in a cabin whom Brodie had lead him to believe was alive] What, this is monstrous. And you let me walk in here like this... without telling me.
Cheyenne Bodie: Just wanted to see how good an actor you are. You're either awful good or awful honest.

A Cheyenne whodunit
16 March 2017 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Not a bad mystery. Cheyenne's hot tempered partner Shorty Jones gets killed and there are four good suspects: Roy Simmons (Mike Connors), Adelaide Marshall (Joanna Barnes), Salor Hornbook (John Russell), and Gregg Dewey (Don Megowan). Shorty was heir to a rich inheritance and now only Cheyenne stands in the way as he is protecting Shorty's son. Cheyenne figures it out but there aren't enough clues viewer to figure it out. The episode has about as happy an ending as possible given the circumstances. What is truly intriguing is the cast. John Russel must have filmed this just prior to becoming Dan Troop of Lawman.
