After another loss by the Red Sox, this time to the Yankees, Carla vows for the umpteenth time that she is no longer a fan. She shows that she is all hot air as usual when a man named Big Ed, a Yankees fan from New York, comes into the bar denigrating the Bosox and Bostonians for supporting the Bosox. When Big Ed starts in on Sam the ex-big time Bosox player who is now "the drunk", Carla has had it with his insults, and physically assaults Big Ed. He in turn threatens to sue unless Sam fires Carla. Sam is in a conundrum as he considers Carla a friend, but she has let her anger get the better of her too many times and if he doesn't do as Eddie requests, he could lose the bar. Sam and Diane convince Carla to see a therapist to deal with her anger issues. To save Carla's job and the bar, Sam too has to convince Ed that in Carla doing so, she is dealing with the issue, and Carla in turn has to demonstrate to Ed that she is both remorseful and changed, which is a tall order since she has ... Did You Know?

The result of the Red Sox-Yankees game is entirely fictional. The video footage was taken from a game on June 8, 1982, in which the Red Sox actually beat the Yankees 4-3 in extra innings at Fenway Park. The audio (Jon Miller's play-by-play call) is not from the same game. See more »

While talking to Carla, the Yankee Fan states that since 1918 the Yankees have won 23 World Championships. The Yankees had only won 22 World Championships throughout the entire run of Cheers. They won their 23rd in 1996. See more »

did i just hear a bear snort?

The always volatile Carla (Rhea Perlman) may have bit off more than she can chew when an irate Yankees fan insults her beloved Red Sox. When he starts hassling Sam about his past career in baseball & drinking problem, she evidentially has enough and physically assaults the guy. The customer threatens to sue Sam if he doesn't fire Carla, which puts Sam in a very awkward position. Luckily a suggestion made by Diane just might save the day.

As the first episode of the series to focus it's main plot on one of it's supporting characters, this was as good and funny as the first two episodes of the series were. And while I could take issue with the final scene not making much sense as it was Carla's day off and she wasn't taking orders for drinks, I'll let such a small quibble slide by as it was a good episode over all.
