Storyline

Rebecca is in a reflective mood after Woody and Kelly's wedding. Rebecca vows to change her life. Her symbol of change is stubbing out the cigarette she is smoking, the last cigarette she vows to ever smoke. After that act, she dumps the cigarette filled ashtray into the wastebasket in the bar office. The next day, Sam, called in by the fire department, arrives at the half burnt down bar. Hysterical, Sam really wants to believe this fire is just another gag by Gary, but the reality of the matter sinks in. Once he realizes that he has insurance to cover the damages, Sam settles into the mindset of rebuilding the bar, but he still wonders what caused the fire. The fire marshal tells Rebecca that the cause was a smoldering cigarette in the wastebasket in the office. Rebecca knows that she once again was the cause of this major screw-up. Others devastated by the fire are Norm, whose "home" is damaged, and Cliff, who had a bagful of undelivered mail stashed behind the bar, which is now ... Written by Huggo

Quotes

[Witnessed by Frasier and Cliff among others, Sam has just kicked Rebecca out of Cheers for good for accidentally burning down the bar, and tells everyone that they are not to defend her]
Frasier: Well, I guess we've seen the dark side of Sam Malone.
Cliff: You want to see dark sides, you ought to see Ma when you leave the shower curtain on the outside of the tub. That's something you don't do twice.

The Little Match Girl (#11.1)
28 June 2014 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

After the wedding Rebecca is depressed about her life and wants to quit smoking. She drops her cigarette into the garbage which ends up in burning down the bar. She doesn't want to tell Sam what the cause of fire was and he thinks it is his own fault. But when she sees him so down, not getting insurance and having to sell his car she tells the truth. He kicks her out, but then takes her back in.

This is less of a funny episode and and ore dramatic. Sure there were some funny moments ("So you monkeys have discovered fire?"), Cheers is good at that. But most of the time one just feels the pain of the characters and seeing Cheers being burned down, as well as one feels for Rebecca. The ending was very sweet. Sam taking Rebecca back because he didn't forget how she took him to work at the bar when he needed help.
