Sam has an inferiority complex with his brother Derek: he's apparently good looking (we the viewer never do see him), is rich, is an international lawyer, owns a Lear jet, has a beautiful rich baritone singing voice, can make trick pool shots, can tap dance, finds Norm a good job and teaches Coach how to speak Spanish. While at the bar, he's the center of attention, except with Sam. All of this Sam can tolerate. The one thing he can't is the fact that Diane is smitten with Derek, and Derek with her - Derek has asked her to go to Martha's Vineyard in his jet - something she doesn't admit to Sam to massage his fragile ego. Even when Sam later tells his date that he wants to focus only on her and the two of them that night, his mind wanders to Diane and Derek when he hears a jet flying overhead. Written by
Did You Know?
Called "Show Down Part 1", we are introduced to Sam Malone's brother Derek. Played by George Ball
we only hear his voice but never see his face, a technique later used for Norm's wife Vera. See more
Sam, you talk alot about our having a dalliance, but I've always been told that "barking dogs don't bite."
Bi-ting. Is that what you're into?
Do you know what bothers me? There are women upon whom this works... and they are allowed to vote and drive cars.
